Is your checklist complete?

1. SAT/ACT: If you need to take the test or retake it to achieve a higher score, register for the SAT/ACT ASAP. Community colleges do not require these tests. If you are going straight to a 4 year university one of these tests are REQUIRED. Follow the links on the right side of this web page to register.

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH: If you are on free and reduced lunch you are qualified for 2 SAT FEE WAIVERS AND 2 ACT FEE WAIVERS. These waivers are located in my office (Rm 1527). If you need a waiver fill out a request form or stop by during lunch.

2. RECOMMENDATION LETTERS: Request recommendation letters from teachers, counselors, employers, or community leaders. DO NOT ask for recommendations from family or relatives. If you are requesting a letter from a teacher or counselor here at MRHS you must complete the PURPLE PACKET first. This packet is located in the counselor’s suite. (It can also be substituted with a resume)

3. TRANSCRIPT AWARENESS: Meet with your counselor to go over our transcript, so that you are aware of your GPA and class ranking. Transcripts are requested from the REGISTRAR located next door to the counselor’s suite. They are $2 each.

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS: Must be sent to EACH college/university you apply to.

UNOFFICAL TRANSCRIPTS: For personal use only. This is usually requested to see where you stand as a student. Unofficial transcripts will be given to all students by the end of October for free.

4. RESUME: Create and update your resume if you are deciding to attach one to your application (most colleges/universities do not require)

Be aware of your deadlines!

Write your essays! Optional essays are not required however, they are beneficial for scholarships. Also if you are not meeting minumum GPA or SAT/ACT requirements for a school and you still want to apply, optional essays are no longer optional! Write them for a better acceptance chance.

Apply to at least 3-5 colleges/universities. Know your options and have solid back up plans! If you used a SAT waiver for the SAT test then you automatically receive for 4 COLLEGE APPLICATION WAIVERS. These are located on your COLLEGEBOARD account. On ApplyTexas at the end of your application click “Request Fee Waiver” and then send in your waivers once you receive them on your collegeboard account.

6. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS: Send in all of your required documents by the deadline. OFFICIAL transcripts are required. If you are going straight to a 4 year university then sending your SAT/ACT scores are required (If you used a waiver you get to send your scores to 4 colleges for free, this is done on your college board account). If you requested a fee waiver on ApplyTexas, you must send them to the school (follow each school’s instructions for sending in college application fee waivers). The schools will inform you of any additional documents needed.

7. FAFSA/TASFA: You need this to be considered for university scholarships, grants, and loans. These opened October 1st! First come first serve! You will need your parent/guardian's  2016 tax information to complete the application. If you have not been legally adopted by your guardian you CANNOT use their tax information.

Scholarships: Apply for as many scholarships as possible. Scholarships = FREE MONEY
