Spanish for Spanish Speakers

Students who selected the course for next year and have not yet taken the placement test will test when school resumes. More information to come.

Katy ISD offers a course that is designed specifically to benefit students that speak Spanish at home so that they may continue to develop and further expand their language skills. This course is unique in that it allows the student to obtain 4 language credits in 2 years. Students can earn 2 credits for Spanish for Spanish Speakers (SpSpSp) 1/2 in one year, offered at the junior high level, and 2 credits for SpSpSp 3 PreAP/AP Spanish Language in another year. The linked video at explains and provides further details about the Spanish for Spanish Speakers program.

Students enrolling in the course must take a placement test to determine eligibility. The placement test is offered in the fall for 7th grade students and in the spring for 8th grade students wishing to enroll in the course for their 9th grade year and who have not already taken the placement test. The test is administered during the school day and eligible 7th graders are notified of the test date in October. 8th graders selecting the course for 9th grade will be notified by their counselor of the spring test administration date.

If you have any questions about the Spanish for Spanish Speakers placement test please contact Cecilia Lara at 281-396-2621 or or Adriana Miles at 281-237-1250 or (Spanish Teacher).

How to Find STAAR and TELPAS Scores For Your Student

All STAAR and TELPAS scores from spring and summer testing may be accessed in the Texas Assessment Data Portal. Paper copies of score reports are no longer provided by TEA. Therefore, utilizing the Portal will be the only avenue to access STAAR and/or TELPAS scores.
For detailed directions on navigating the Texas Assessment Data Portal, please click on one of the following links:

TELPAS Testing Dates

TEA has extended the TELPAS testing window until May 29th for ESL currently-served and parent denial students. However, at this time Katy ISD has not yet decided if that is the appropriate course of action for our district and students. Please check back at a later date for further details.

Currently served and waiver English as a Second Language (ESL) students will participate in the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) during the spring semester. Students are assessed in four domains: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.
Writing samples will be collected during your child's math, science, English and social studies classes during a window of February 10 - February 28, 2020.
The Reading, Listening and Speaking assessments are administered online during the week of March 16 - 20.
Additional online testing will take place during the week of March 23 - 27 as needed.

Katy ISD District Learning Assessments (DLAs)

DLAs are common formative assessments designed to gather evidence of student learning. As part of a balanced program, DLAs are not intended to be the sole assessment instrument in determining student learning. Rather, they provide teachers and students with diagnostic information to help guide the learning process.
Additional information about the DLAs can be found in the District Learning Assessment FAQs and in the District Learning Assessment Guidelines.
The secondary DLA administration calendar can be found by clicking here. For more specific administration dates, please contact your child's teacher(s).

8th grade SSI Information

Students have 3 opportunities to pass the STAAR math and reading test in 8th grade - two during the spring and one during the summer. Students must pass these assessments to be promoted to the 9th grade.
