8752V Cosmetology II (two credits-taken concurrently with Design & Color Theory) Grade: 12
Prerequisite: Introduction to Cosmetology and Cosmetology I
Students will put their skills to the test as they service clients on campus. They will continue to learn new skills and techniques in the industry. Students may be eligible to take the exam for their Cosmetology license through the state of Texas if all requirements are met by the end of their senior year of high school.
Why take Cosmetology and what type of experience will students gain?
The Cosmetology industry includes a variety of areas in which our students will have the opportunity to learn. Our instructors will teach students the latest haircut techniques, how to color and highlight hair correctly, as well as the proper procedures for giving manicures and pedicures. Students will also have the chance to learn new makeup techniques from guest speakers who give demonstrations during the school year. During lab time, students use their own stations to practice the skills they have learned. Second year students also have the opportunity to work on clients who come in for hair and nail services after school. This not only provides practice, but supplements the hours necessary for our students to qualify for the licensing exam at the end of their second year at MCTC.
What types of jobs can you do in the field of Cosmetology?
- Salon Manager or Owner
- Film Makeup Artist
- Wedding/Event Stylist
Can you earn a certification while taking Cosmetology at MCTC?
Yes. Students who complete both years of Cosmetology may be eligible to test for their Texas Cosmetology License once they have graduated high school. Students must also accumulate 1000 clock hours of lab time throughout those two years as part of the requirement to take the licensing exam. Many of the hours will be accrued during the regular school day, however, students will have the opportunity to supplement their hours on Tuesdays or Wednesdays after school from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Our program meets all requirements for a Cosmetology license, issued by the Texas Department of Licensing Regulation (TDLR), after students pass both the written and practical portions of the exam, show proof of required TDLR documentation, and proof of a high school diploma.
